India Stun World Champions Germany 3-1 in FIH Pro League Upset

The Indian men’s hockey team produced a commanding performance to defeat reigning world champions Germany 3-1 in the FIH Pro League 2025-26 match in Rotterdam on Wednesday.

The win marked India’s first victory of the season and came against a higher-ranked German side, currently placed fifth in the world rankings.

Early Goals Set the Tone

India made a strong start and took control of the match early in the first quarter.

Mandeep Singh opened the scoring in the 7th minute after a well-worked move inside the circle, finishing calmly to give India a 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later, Shilanand Lakra doubled the advantage in the 13th minute, putting India firmly in command before the first break.

Sharma Extends Lead After Half-Time

India maintained their momentum after the interval and added a third goal through Nilakanta Sharma in the 35th minute.

Germany struggled to break through India’s disciplined defence, despite increasing pressure in the second half.

Germany Pull One Back

Germany managed to reduce the deficit in the 45th minute when Raphael Hartkopf found the net after a quick attacking move.

However, India remained organised at the back and successfully denied further chances from the world champions in the final quarter.

Historic Milestone for Manpreet Singh

The match also marked a major milestone for veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, who became India’s most-capped hockey player with his 413th international appearance, surpassing Dilip Tirkey’s long-standing record.

India Look Ahead in Pro League Campaign

With this result, India moved to seven points in the FIH Pro League standings and remain in eighth position overall.

The team will next face hosts Netherlands in Rotterdam as the competition continues.
