United States Beat Australia 2-0 to Reach World Cup Round of 32
The United States secured a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a confident 2-0 victory over Australia in their Group D match in Seattle on Friday.
The co-hosts took control early after an own goal from Australian defender Cameron Burgess handed the U.S. the opening score. The goal came under pressure from a dangerous attacking move, giving the Americans a strong start.
Just before halftime, Alex Freeman doubled the lead with a well-placed header. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was later confirmed after a review, allowing the U.S. to head into the break with a comfortable advantage.
Australia made changes at halftime in an attempt to recover, but they struggled to break down a well-organized U.S. defense. The match became increasingly one-sided as the United States maintained control and limited their opponents’ chances.
The win takes the U.S. to six points in Group D, confirming their qualification for the knockout stage ahead of their final group match against Turkey in Los Angeles. They will top the group if results go their way in other fixtures.
Australia remain on three points and will need a positive result in their final group game to stay in contention for advancement.
The United States managed the match effectively in the second half, controlling possession and defending their lead to secure a comfortable and important victory in front of a home crowd.
