Study Claims High Share of AI-Generated Content on TikTok Feeds

A recent report suggests that a significant portion of videos shown on TikTok’s “For You” feed may be AI-generated, raising concerns about content quality and user experience.

According to research conducted by video creation platform Kapwing, around 59% of videos shown on a newly created TikTok account were identified as AI-generated or low-quality automated content.

The study reviewed the first 500 videos appearing in the feed and found that 294 of them fell into this category. For comparison, a similar test conducted on YouTube Shorts found a lower proportion, with about 21% of videos classified in the same way.

The report also highlighted that children’s content was particularly affected. In a separate review of more than 10,000 TikTok videos across multiple categories, the Kids section showed the highest concentration of AI-generated content.

Within specific hashtags such as #cartoonkids, nearly all sampled videos were flagged as AI-generated. Other child-focused categories, including #cartoons and #babysong, also showed high percentages.

By contrast, categories involving real-life activities such as fashion, fitness, and music showed much lower levels of AI-generated content.

The study further noted that categories like science, education, health, and history also contained a noticeable share of AI-generated videos, likely due to their reliance on narration and visual illustrations.

Researchers also pointed out that TikTok has already labeled over a billion videos as AI-generated, indicating the growing presence of such content on the platform.

The findings highlight ongoing discussions about the role of AI-generated media on social platforms, especially in content targeted toward younger audiences.
