IOC President Encourages People Worldwide to Embrace Active Living on Olympic Day 2026
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry has encouraged people around the world to take the first step toward a more active lifestyle as part of Olympic Day 2026 celebrations.
Her message aligns with this year’s “Let’s Move” global campaign, themed “You Can Do This”, which aims to inspire young people to overcome self-doubt and build confidence through physical activity and sport.
In a video message released ahead of Olympic Day on June 23, Coventry highlighted the importance of movement for both physical and mental well-being. She said that staying active helps improve health, boosts confidence, and strengthens social connections.
She emphasized that even small actions can make a difference, encouraging people to start with simple steps and gradually build a habit of regular movement.
Coventry also noted that Olympic Day celebrations are taking place in communities around the world, including parks, schools, and public spaces, where people are coming together to participate in sports and physical activities.
She urged individuals to take part in any form of movement that suits them, adding that there is no perfect way to begin and that the most important step is simply to start.
The IOC’s “Let’s Move” initiative, developed in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), was launched in 2022 to address rising levels of physical inactivity globally. It has since grown into a year-round campaign promoting healthier lifestyles through sport and community engagement.
According to WHO data, a significant number of adults and young people worldwide are not meeting recommended daily activity levels, contributing to long-term health concerns. The campaign aims to address this issue by making physical activity more accessible and encouraging participation at all levels.
The IOC continues to promote Olympic Day as an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in sports and discover the benefits of staying active.
