South Africa Make History with 1-0 Win Over South Korea to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

Report;  Imran Sohail

South Africa secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds for the first time after defeating South Korea 1-0 in their final Group A match on Wednesday.

The decisive goal came from Thapelo Maseko in the second half, helping South Africa finish second in the group and continue their impressive World Cup journey.

After opening the tournament with a 2-0 defeat to group winners Mexico, South Africa responded strongly with a draw against the Czech Republic before earning a crucial victory over South Korea in a winner-takes-all encounter.

Both teams created opportunities during an entertaining first half. South Korea started brightly and came close to scoring through Kim Min-jae and Lee Kang-in, while South Africa also threatened but could not convert their chances.

South Korea introduced captain Son Heung-min at halftime in an attempt to change the momentum of the match. The experienced forward added energy to the attack, but South Africa remained organized defensively.

The breakthrough arrived in the 63rd minute when Tshepang Moremi delivered a cross into the penalty area and Thapelo Maseko finished confidently to put South Africa ahead.

South Korea pushed forward in search of an equalizer during the closing stages, but South Africa held firm to secure a memorable victory and a place in the Round of 32.

The result marks a significant achievement for South African football, with the team reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in its history.

Mexico finished top of Group A with a perfect record of three wins from three matches, while South Africa advanced as runners-up and will face Canada in the next round.

With growing confidence and momentum, South Africa will now look to continue its remarkable World Cup campaign in the knockout stage.
