Switzerland Beat Canada 2-1 to Finish Top of World Cup Group B
Report: Imran Sohail
Switzerland secured first place in Group B at the FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada on Wednesday, while both teams advanced to the knockout stage.
Goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi in the second half helped Switzerland finish the group stage with seven points. Canada responded through Promise David late in the match but could not find an equalizer.
The result ensured Switzerland topped the group, while Canada finished second and qualified for the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in the nation’s history.
After a competitive first half, Switzerland broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. Johan Manzambi created the opportunity with an attacking run before Ruben Vargas finished calmly to give his side the lead.
Manzambi later doubled Switzerland’s advantage in the 57th minute, scoring his third goal of the tournament and putting the Swiss firmly in control.
Canada increased the pressure in the closing stages and pulled one goal back through substitute Promise David, who converted a well-delivered cross to set up an exciting finish.
The hosts continued to push forward in search of an equalizer, but Switzerland’s defense held firm to secure all three points and first place in the group standings.
Canada’s qualification marks a significant achievement for the co-host nation. Before the 2026 tournament, Canada had never won a match at a FIFA World Cup finals. The team will now prepare for a Round of 32 clash against the runner-up from Group A.
Elsewhere in Group B, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1 to finish third and remain in contention for a place among the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
