Portugal produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Croatia 2-1 on Thursday, securing a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a late winning goal from Goncalo Ramos.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić, two of football’s most experienced stars, faced each other in a memorable knockout encounter that remained competitive until the final moments.
Croatia held the advantage for much of the match before Portugal found an equalizer in the 68th minute. Ronaldo confidently converted a penalty, scoring his first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout-stage goal and bringing his team back into the contest.
The veteran forward was substituted in the 81st minute after helping shift the momentum in Portugal’s favor.
Portugal completed the comeback in stoppage time when Goncalo Ramos rose above the defense to head home the winning goal, sparking celebrations among the Portuguese players and supporters.
Croatia thought they had found a dramatic late equalizer, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, confirming Portugal’s victory.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said he remained confident despite the pressure of the occasion and was pleased to contribute to the team’s success.
Match-winner Ramos also expressed his excitement after delivering the decisive goal, saying he enjoys playing in high-pressure matches and looks forward to more opportunities in the tournament.
With the victory, Portugal advances to the Round of 16, where it will face Spain on Monday in one of the tournament’s most anticipated knockout fixtures.
