UK to Launch Walking Challenge With Rewards for Participants

LONDON: People living in England, including British Pakistanis, may soon be able to earn rewards by taking part in a new walking initiative being introduced by the National Health Service (NHS).

The program, expected to launch in early 2027, encourages participants to complete a “marathon a month” by walking approximately 26 miles over the course of each month—an average of around 30 minutes of walking per day.

Participants to Receive Incentives

According to the NHS plan, those who successfully complete the monthly walking challenge will be eligible for rewards that may include discounts, vouchers, and other incentives.

Participants will be able to track their progress digitally using a smartphone, smartwatch, or an online platform, making it easier to monitor daily activity.

Promoting Health Through Regular Activity

The initiative has been developed with the support of former Olympic medalist Sir Brendan Foster, founder of the Great North Run. The goal is to encourage more people to adopt regular walking as part of a healthier lifestyle rather than focusing on demanding fitness routines.

Health officials hope the challenge will attract more than 100,000 participants, potentially making it one of the largest community walking campaigns of its kind.

Part of England’s Long-Term Health Strategy

The walking challenge forms part of England’s broader 10-year health plan, which emphasizes disease prevention and increasing everyday physical activity.

According to official figures, millions of adults in England do not meet recommended physical activity levels, and health experts say regular exercise can help improve overall well-being while reducing the risk of several long-term health conditions.

Supporters of the initiative believe encouraging a simple daily habit, such as walking, can help people stay active over the long term.

Further details regarding the reward system, registration process, and eligibility requirements are expected to be announced before the program officially launches.
