Balochistan Allocates Rs3 Billion for Quetta Shuttle Train as Pakistan Railways Expands Modernization Projects
Pakistan Railways is moving forward with several infrastructure and modernization projects across the country, supported by financial assistance from provincial governments to improve passenger services and preserve historic railway stations.
According to Pakistan Railways Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Hafeezullah, the Government of Balochistan has allocated Rs3 billion for the launch of a new shuttle service, named the People’s Train, in Quetta.
The shuttle train is expected to operate on a 15-kilometer route within Quetta city. Pakistan Railways has arranged dedicated locomotives and passenger coaches for the service, while six railway stations along the route have been rehabilitated. Officials say the train is scheduled to begin operations on August 14.
Lahore and Taxila Railway Stations to Be Restored
Pakistan Railways has also finalized master plans for the restoration, conservation, and modernization of the historic Lahore and Taxila railway stations in collaboration with the Punjab government, which will provide funding for the projects.
The restoration of Lahore Railway Station will include structural repairs, waterproofing, roof rehabilitation, improved drainage systems, heritage-style lighting, upgraded passenger waiting areas, a modern family lounge, improved reservation facilities, comfortable seating, and enhanced passenger information services. The project aims to preserve the station’s historic architecture while introducing modern amenities.
At Taxila Railway Station, the plan includes improved pedestrian walkways, organized parking, upgraded public washrooms, restoration of the historic ticket office, landscaped public spaces, Victorian-style lighting, and the conversion of the old goods warehouse into a café and restaurant. Heritage displays highlighting Taxila’s rich cultural history are also planned.
Officials said both projects will follow internationally recognized heritage conservation standards while improving accessibility, passenger comfort, and tourism facilities.
Sindh Government Supports Rohri and Sukkur Station Upgrades
The Sindh government has provided an initial Rs750 million to Pakistan Railways for the rehabilitation and modernization of the Rohri and Sukkur railway stations.
Railway officials said another installment of Rs750 million is expected to be released in the near future to continue the improvement work.
KP Government Plans Future Cooperation
According to Pakistan Railways, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has also expressed its intention to work with the railway department. The provincial cabinet has approved signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support improvements in railway infrastructure and passenger facilities.
Focus on Heritage and Passenger Services
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi said that historic railway stations such as Lahore and Taxila represent an important part of Pakistan’s cultural and architectural heritage. He added that restoration work will preserve their original character while providing modern, safe, and comfortable facilities for travelers.
Pakistan Railways says these projects are part of a broader strategy to modernize railway infrastructure, preserve historic buildings, improve passenger services, and promote tourism across the country.
