Punjab Records More Than 1,000 Snake Bite Cases in Eight Months

More than 1,000 snake bite incidents have been reported across Punjab during the first eight months of 2026, with six people losing their lives, according to data from Rescue 1122.

The emergency service recorded 1,060 snake bite cases between January 1 and August 31, 2026.

Men and Women Among Those Affected

According to the Rescue 1122 report, 614 men and 446 women were bitten by snakes during the period.

The figures highlight the continued risk posed by snakes, particularly during the rainy season when their usual habitats can become difficult to remain in.

Why Snake Encounters Increase During Rains

Wildlife Department officials said snake bite incidents generally rise during periods of heavy rainfall.

Rainwater can collect in low-lying areas and residential settlements, forcing snakes to leave their usual hiding places in search of dry and safer locations.

As snakes move into populated areas, the chances of encounters with residents can increase, potentially leading to more snake bite incidents.

Wildlife Department Advises Caution

The Wildlife Department has urged people to remain particularly careful during the rainy season and take appropriate preventive measures to reduce the risk of snake encounters.

Residents are advised to stay alert in areas where rainwater accumulates and around places where snakes may seek shelter.
