Karachi to Experience 48-Hour Water Shortage Due to Infrastructure Upgrade

Karachi to Experience 48-Hour Water Shortage Due to Infrastructure Upgrade

Karachi is expected to face a temporary water shortage of approximately 250 million gallons per day (MGD) for 48 hours as authorities begin work on a key infrastructure upgrade.

According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), the final connection of Transmission Line No. 5 at the Dhabeji Pumping Station will start on Saturday evening and is scheduled to be completed within two days.

The shutdown will take place from noon on April 25 to April 27 as part of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP), which aims to modernize the city’s water supply system.

Areas Affected

During the maintenance period, water supply from the Fourth Phase, K-II, and K-III systems will remain suspended.

Areas likely to face significant disruption include:

  • North Karachi
  • Surjani Town
  • Scheme 33
  • Gulistan-i-Jauhar

Meanwhile, partial shortages are expected in:

  • Gulshan-i-Iqbal
  • Saddar
  • Chanesar Town

Supply Reduction and System Impact

Karachi typically receives around 650 MGD of water, but supply is expected to drop to nearly 400 MGD during the shutdown.

To carry out the upgrade, nine out of 21 pumps at Dhabeji will be temporarily turned off. Seven pumps are expected to resume operations by April 27, while two will remain offline for a few additional days for technical work.

Water hydrants at Nipa, Safoora, and Sakhi Hasan will also remain closed during this period.

Expected Benefits

Officials say the upgrade will help improve water transmission efficiency and stabilize pressure across the network once completed.

Residents are advised to manage water usage carefully during the disruption period.
