Rubio Meets China’s Wang Yi as ASEAN Talks Focus on Regional Security

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, where regional leaders discussed key security and economic challenges.

The high-level meeting comes as countries across the Asia-Pacific region continue to monitor tensions in the Middle East and ongoing disputes in the South China Sea.

US-China Talks Continue

Rubio and Wang Yi held bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the ASEAN gathering. While neither official spoke to the media before the meeting, reports suggest the talks may have included preparations for a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.

The discussions took place as Washington and Beijing continue efforts to manage their complex relationship following recent trade and diplomatic negotiations.

Middle East Situation Also Discussed

During meetings with ASEAN foreign ministers, Rubio addressed the ongoing conflict involving Iran and stressed the importance of maintaining stability in the region.

He said the United States remains open to dialogue but emphasized that protecting its interests and those of its allies remains a priority. Rubio also highlighted the strategic importance of keeping major international shipping routes open.

South China Sea Remains a Key Concern

The South China Sea was another major topic during the regional summit.

Several countries continue to have overlapping territorial claims in the area, making it one of the world’s most closely watched maritime regions. Recent incidents involving Chinese and Philippine vessels have increased regional concerns.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called for stability and urged all parties to avoid actions that could increase tensions.

China responded by stating that countries outside the territorial disputes should avoid interfering in regional matters.

China Calls for Cooperation

Speaking to ASEAN representatives, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of cooperation, mutual trust, and dialogue among regional partners.

He said China and ASEAN countries should work together to promote peace, stability, and economic development across the region.

Wider International Participation

The ASEAN meetings also brought together representatives from several major economies, including:

  • United States
  • China
  • Japan
  • India
  • Australia
  • South Korea
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • European Union
  • Russia

In addition, Rubio participated in a meeting of the Quad group, comprising the United States, Japan, India, and Australia. The four countries reaffirmed their support for a free and open Indo-Pacific and continued cooperation with ASEAN.

Outlook

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting remains an important platform for diplomatic engagement, allowing regional and global powers to discuss security, trade, and economic cooperation. Observers will closely watch whether ongoing dialogue between the United States and China helps ease tensions and supports greater regional stability.
