Rubio Meets China’s Wang Yi as ASEAN Talks Focus on Regional Security
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, where regional leaders discussed key security and economic challenges.
The high-level meeting comes as countries across the Asia-Pacific region continue to monitor tensions in the Middle East and ongoing disputes in the South China Sea.
US-China Talks Continue
Rubio and Wang Yi held bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the ASEAN gathering. While neither official spoke to the media before the meeting, reports suggest the talks may have included preparations for a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.
The discussions took place as Washington and Beijing continue efforts to manage their complex relationship following recent trade and diplomatic negotiations.

During meetings with ASEAN foreign ministers, Rubio addressed the ongoing conflict involving Iran and stressed the importance of maintaining stability in the region.

South China Sea Remains a Key Concern

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called for stability and urged all parties to avoid actions that could increase tensions.
