ADB Reaffirms Support for Pakistan’s ML-1 Railway Project
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has reaffirmed its support for Pakistan’s Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project, highlighting its importance for improving the country’s rail infrastructure and regional connectivity.
The commitment was made during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and senior ADB officials at the bank’s headquarters in Manila.
ML-1 Remains a Key Infrastructure Priority
During the meeting, Ishaq Dar described the ML-1 railway project as one of the government’s major infrastructure priorities under the current development agenda.
He also requested the ADB to continue supporting the project and help accelerate its processing while leading the consortium of financial partners involved in its development.
ADB Highlights Project’s Importance
ADB officials reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with Pakistan and said the ML-1 project has the potential to:
- Modernize Pakistan’s railway network
- Improve regional connectivity
- Enhance transportation efficiency
- Support long-term economic development
The bank noted that upgrading the railway system could contribute to stronger trade and more efficient movement of passengers and freight.
Broader Development Cooperation
Both sides also discussed expanding cooperation in several areas, including:
- Infrastructure development
- Climate resilience
- Regional connectivity
- Sustainable economic growth
The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing development partnership between Pakistan and the Asian Development Bank, which spans more than six decades.
Additional Diplomatic Meetings
On the sidelines of the 33rd ASEAN Regional Forum Ministerial Meeting in Manila, Ishaq Dar also held separate meetings with officials from Russia, the European Union, and Bangladesh.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, trade, energy, regional connectivity, and other areas of mutual interest.
