GLASGOW: Pakistan’s Fatima Zahra has created history by becoming the first Pakistani woman boxer to guarantee a medal at the Commonwealth Games, advancing to the semi-finals of the women’s 60kg category with an impressive victory.
The 22-year-old defeated Jordan Wilson of New Zealand by a 5-0 unanimous decision in the quarter-finals, ensuring at least a bronze medal under the tournament’s format, where both losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals.
Historic Achievement for Pakistan
Fatima’s success marks a major milestone for Pakistan’s women’s boxing program, which made its international debut only a decade ago. Her achievement guarantees Pakistan a place on the medal podium in women’s boxing for the first time in Commonwealth Games history.
Speaking after the victory, Fatima expressed her excitement and confidence in the future of Pakistani boxing.
She said the result reflects the progress being made in the sport and added that her goal is now to reach the final and compete for the gold medal.
Dominant Performance
Fatima controlled the contest from the opening round, displaying strong technique and confidence throughout the three-round bout.
Four judges scored the fight 29-28 in her favor, while the fifth awarded her a 30-27 victory, completing a convincing unanimous decision.
She will now face Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh in the semi-finals on Friday, with a place in the gold medal match on the line.
Mixed Day for Pakistan
While Fatima celebrated a historic win, Pakistan’s campaign in the men’s boxing competition came to an end after Qudratullah was defeated by Jude Gallagher of Northern Ireland in the men’s 60kg event.
Gallagher secured the victory after a competitive bout, ending Pakistan’s participation in the men’s boxing events at the Games.
Other Results
Pakistan also faced challenges in other sports.
In athletics, Mohammad Ismail finished 41st in the men’s 400-meter heats and did not qualify for the next round.
In swimming, Hamza Asif placed 46th in the men’s 50-meter butterfly heats, missing out on a place in the semi-finals.
Despite the setbacks in other events, Fatima Zahra’s historic achievement stands out as one of Pakistan’s biggest highlights at the Commonwealth Games and reflects the growing development of women’s boxing in the country.
