Lionel Messi Announces Retirement From International Football

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football after guiding his country to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
The 39-year-old football star shared the decision on Instagram, saying it was difficult but that he believed the time had come to end his international career.
Messi revealed that he had written the statement two days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the World Cup final on July 19. He said the decision had become clearer following the death of his father, Jorge, in August.
Messi Reflects on His Argentina Career
In his message, Messi said he had always tried to give his best for Argentina and his supporters throughout his international career.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said representing the national team had been a source of great pride and that he had worked to bring happiness to Argentine fans.
Messi also acknowledged that his international career was reaching its final stage and said a new generation of talented players was ready to take responsibility for the national team.
He thanked supporters, family members, coaches and teammates for their backing throughout his career.
A Remarkable International Career
Messi leaves international football after one of the most successful periods in Argentina’s history.
He played a central role in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph in Qatar, where his team defeated France in a penalty shootout in the final.
The Argentine captain later helped his country reach another World Cup final in 2026, although Argentina eventually lost to Spain.
Over the years, Messi became one of the most influential players in Argentina’s history, combining individual achievements with major international success.
Future With Inter Miami
Although Messi is stepping away from international football, he remains involved in club football.
His contract with Major League Soccer side Inter Miami is currently scheduled to run through the end of the 2028 season.
Messi said he would continue supporting Argentina from outside the national team setup and expressed gratitude for the memories he shared with teammates and supporters during his international career.
