Google Rolls Out New Pixel Features With September Update
Google has started rolling out its September Pixel Drop, introducing several new features and improvements for compatible Pixel devices. The update brings enhanced VIP contact shortcuts, expanded scam detection, wider access to Pause Point, and new Harry Potter-themed customization options.
The latest Pixel update is available for smartphones beginning with the Pixel 6 series. The Pixel Tablet is not included in this rollout.
Google is distributing the update gradually, so some users—particularly those with carrier-specific models—may have to wait several weeks. Feature availability can also vary based on the user’s country, language, and device.
VIP Contacts Get New Quick Actions
The Pixel VIP Contacts widget has received a useful upgrade that makes it easier to communicate with important contacts.
Users can now call or send a message to a VIP contact with a single tap. The widget also displays indicators for missed calls and unread messages.
A new floating menu at the bottom of the widget allows users to quickly move between different VIP contacts.
Gboard Adds Scam Warning Feature
Google is expanding its scam protection tools to the Gboard keyboard.
When users start responding to a potentially suspicious message, Gboard can display a “Likely scam” warning above the keyboard. This gives users an opportunity to stop before sharing information or continuing a conversation.
The company is also bringing scam detection to notifications. Suspicious messages can be flagged before users open them.
Google says the detection process runs directly on the device, which helps keep users’ conversations private.
The feature currently supports Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese and Spanish.
Scam Detection was initially introduced in the United States and is now expanding to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
Pause Point Expands to Older Pixel Phones
Pause Point, which debuted with the Pixel 11 lineup, is now becoming available on older Pixel smartphones dating back to the Pixel 6 series.
The feature is designed to help users reduce unnecessary time spent on distracting applications.
For example, when someone attempts to open a selected app such as Facebook, Pause Point introduces an additional step before the application launches. The brief interruption is intended to give users a moment to reconsider whether they really want to open the app.
New Harry Potter Pixel Customization
Google is also adding Harry Potter-themed content to Pixel devices as part of the launch of Audible’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.
The new Harry Potter Audiobook Packs allow users to customize their Pixel phones with themed wallpapers, icons and sounds inspired by the audiobooks.
Eligible Pixel users can also receive a two-month Audible trial to listen to the new audiobook releases.
The promotional offer is available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan and Australia until January 14.
The Harry Potter customization themes will remain available until December 31.
Pixel Watch Receives New Improvements
Google has also included updates for Pixel Watch users.
The latest software improves the Raise to Talk feature with an updated gesture model. Google is also expanding support for one-handed gestures across additional applications.
Alongside these changes, the update includes several bug fixes aimed at improving the overall smartwatch experience.
September Pixel Drop Availability
The September Pixel Drop is being rolled out to eligible Pixel smartphones starting with the Pixel 6 series. However, users may not receive every feature at the same time.
Availability can depend on the specific Pixel model, region, carrier and language settings. Google is releasing the update in phases, meaning some devices may receive it later than others.
