Government Removes Five-Litre Limit From Petrol Relief Scheme
The federal government has removed the five-litre purchase limit attached to its petrol relief scheme, allowing eligible beneficiaries to receive the weekly Rs. 500 discount even when buying less than five litres of fuel.
Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima announced the changes during a press conference, saying the government had introduced several measures to make the relief programme accessible to a larger number of people amid rising international oil prices and regional tensions.
More Motorcycles and Three-Wheelers Now Eligible
Under the revised rules, motorcycles and three-wheelers registered on or after January 1, 2006, can now be registered for the scheme.
The government has also removed the five-litre limit previously linked to each fuel token.
In addition, citizens will no longer have to pay for SMS messages related to the registration process.
Most Registrations Come From Two and Three-Wheelers
Fatima said the government considered different proposals regarding the inclusion of motorcycles and three-wheelers before finalising the revised scheme.
According to the minister, 91.6% of registrations under the programme are currently for two- and three-wheelers, while vehicles with engines of up to 800cc account for 8.4%.
The figures indicate that the relief programme is being used primarily by owners of motorcycles and three-wheelers.
Nearly 1.5 Million Fuel Tokens Issued
The government has issued 1,493,848 fuel tokens to citizens under the scheme, while 655,067 people have already received fuel benefits.
Fatima said the implementation committee is meeting three times a day to monitor progress and address problems.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also closely monitoring the programme’s figures and has instructed officials to resolve difficulties faced by beneficiaries as quickly as possible.
Government Removes Scheme Charges
According to the minister, all charges associated with the petrol relief programme have been removed.
She also warned citizens against sharing their CNIC numbers or registration information with other people. Beneficiaries were advised to report anyone who demands money for registration or access to the relief.
How to Register Through SMS
Citizens can register by sending an SMS to 9771.
The message should contain:
- The applicant’s 13-digit CNIC number
- The first word of the province where the vehicle is registered
- The vehicle’s registration details
Complaints related to petrol pumps can be submitted through 9772. If a petrol station refuses to provide the applicable relief, citizens can report the matter through 9771.
Rs. 100 Per-Litre Relief for Vehicles Up to 800cc
Fatima said the government has designed the registration process to remain simple so more eligible citizens can benefit.
The minister also said the programme provides Rs. 100 per litre in relief for vehicles with engines up to 800cc, as part of the government’s broader fuel support measures.
