Typhoon Dujuan Leaves Four Dead and Thousands Without Power in Japan

TOKYO: Powerful rains from Typhoon Dujuan have caused landslides and flooding along Japan’s Pacific coast, leaving at least four people dead and six others missing, according to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.

The storm also disrupted electricity supplies, with around 45,000 households reportedly without power in affected areas.

One of the fatalities was a woman in her 60s who died after mud entered her home in Yokosuka, in Kanagawa Prefecture. NHK reported that the other three people who died were between their 50s and 80s.

Rescue teams were working in Miura, south of Tokyo, where debris from a landslide was being cleared as authorities searched for a person reported missing at a house.

Heavy rainfall also caused rivers to overflow in parts of Chiba Prefecture, resulting in widespread flooding.

Tokyo Electric Power Company reported that approximately 45,000 households in the region had lost electricity as crews worked to restore supplies.

Residents described the impact of the rainfall as severe. Richard Yonamine, a resident of Sakura in Chiba, said floodwater entered his home after a nearby river rose following the heavy rain.

The latest storm comes after other episodes of heavy rainfall and flooding affected parts of Japan in recent months.

Typhoon Dujuan is also part of a wider period of severe weather that has affected several regions around the world, with heavy rainfall, flooding and tropical cyclones reported across parts of Asia, North America and Europe.

Authorities continued to assess damage and carry out rescue and recovery operations as the typhoon moved northeast away from Japan.
