Novak Djokovic Confident Ahead of China Open Comeback

The 24-time Grand Slam champion returns to Beijing after a month away from competitive tennis

LONDON: Novak Djokovic says he is feeling positive physically as he prepares to return to competitive action at the China Open in Beijing.

The 39-year-old Serbian has not played since his unexpected first-round defeat to Mariano Navone at the US Open last month. Djokovic struggled with shoulder and back problems during that match and also became sick on court.

He is now set to begin his China Open campaign against Portugal’s Nuno Borges this week.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Djokovic said his body had responded well during his preparations and that he was satisfied with his current condition.

However, the former world number one acknowledged that competing in an official match would provide a different test compared with training sessions and practice sets.

Djokovic has a strong record in China and has won the Beijing tournament six times. His previous titles came in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

He also remains unbeaten at the ATP 500 event, with a perfect 29-0 record.

That history has given Djokovic additional confidence as he prepares for his return.

The Serbian star said his tournament choices have changed at this stage of his career, with greater focus on events where he enjoys competing, has enjoyed success and receives strong support from fans.

Djokovic has not played in Beijing for 11 years. In recent seasons, scheduling issues meant he mainly competed at the Shanghai tournament when playing in China.

He said Beijing was placed among his priorities for this year’s schedule.

The veteran continues to pursue a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, one of the major targets still remaining in his career.
