Viral iPhone Footage Emerges After Cargo Ship Sinks in Strait of Hormuz
Viral videos circulating on social media appear to show iPhone boxes and luxury perfume packages floating in the Strait of Hormuz after a Singapore-flagged cargo vessel caught fire and sank near Oman. However, the authenticity and origin of the footage remain unverified, and it is unclear whether iPhones were actually part of the ship’s cargo.
The vessel, named GFS Pride, reportedly sank near the Musandam Peninsula following a strike by an unidentified projectile. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said the incident damaged the ship and triggered a fire. All 21 crew members were evacuated safely, with no injuries reported.
Videos shared online appear to show electronic product boxes and perfume packages floating among scattered shipping containers, while small boats move through the area. However, major media outlets, including India Today, reported that they could not independently confirm when or where the footage was recorded.
Separately, AI-generated images claiming to show large quantities of iPhones floating in the water have also circulated online, adding to the confusion surrounding the incident.
Conflicting Accounts of the Maritime Incident
The circumstances surrounding the sinking remain disputed. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that the vessel struck a naval mine while travelling along what it described as an unauthorised route through the Strait of Hormuz.
In contrast, Singaporean maritime authorities and other reports attributed the damage to an unidentified projectile strike.
Another Singapore-flagged vessel, GFS Giselle, was also reportedly hit during the same period. The ship sustained hull damage but managed to reach a safe anchorage with its crew on board.
Pakistan’s Hydrographer issued a warning to mariners stating that GFS Pride had sunk approximately four nautical miles north-west of Ras al-Sheikh Masud. Meanwhile, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported multiple projectile incidents involving commercial vessels in the strategic waterway.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Is Important
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, serving as a major passage for international oil and gas shipments. Any disruption to shipping in the region can affect energy supplies, transportation costs and global trade.
Maritime security concerns have increased amid the wider regional conflict, with commercial vessels facing heightened risks and shipping movements experiencing restrictions.
Although the viral footage has drawn attention because of the apparent consumer products in the water, the presence of iPhones aboard the sunken vessel has not been independently confirmed.
The confirmed maritime incident highlights the continuing risks facing commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while the exact circumstances of the vessel’s sinking and the origin of the viral images remain subjects of uncertainty.
