Verstappen Targets Third Straight Victory as Antonelli Closes in on F1 Championship
Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail
Max Verstappen is aiming to extend his winning streak at the United States Grand Prix as Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli moves closer to securing the Formula One world championship.
The four-time world champion has returned to strong form with victories at the Bahrain and Singapore Grands Prix, strengthening Red Bull’s position ahead of this weekend’s race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
Verstappen, 29, is hoping to claim another victory at the Texan circuit, where he won from pole position last year. However, the Dutch driver remains cautious about his chances, saying the track presents a different challenge and that he prefers to approach each race individually.
His recent performances have been impressive, with seven podium finishes in his last eight races, including two victories and three second-place results. Despite sitting fourth in the championship, 119 points behind the leader, Verstappen could still influence the title battle by challenging the leading contenders.
Antonelli Closes in on Historic Title
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, 20, heads into the United States Grand Prix with a strong opportunity to make history. He holds a 102-point advantage over teammate George Russell and could become Italy’s first Formula One world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
According to the championship scenarios outlined ahead of the race, Antonelli would need to win in Texas while Russell finishes outside the top nine and Lewis Hamilton finishes outside the top four to secure the title this weekend.
The young Italian has acknowledged the significance of his position but insists that maintaining focus and delivering strong performances remain his priorities.
Antonelli could also become the youngest world champion in Formula One history, surpassing the record set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010.
Russell and Hamilton Remain in Contention
George Russell will be determined to reduce the gap to his Mercedes teammate, while Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton could also play an important role in the contest.
Hamilton has enjoyed considerable success at the Circuit of the Americas and will be looking to add another victory at a venue that has been one of his strongest tracks.
Mercedes is expected to introduce its latest car updates for the upcoming races in the United States, Mexico and Brazil. The developments could prove important as the teams enter a demanding stretch of the season.
Red Bull and Ferrari will also be looking to take advantage of the conditions, with bumpy surfaces and high temperatures potentially affecting car performance and race strategy.
Verstappen Expects a Tough Weekend
Verstappen has warned that the Austin circuit could provide a demanding physical challenge for drivers because of its uneven surface.
The Dutchman expects the track conditions to test both the cars and the drivers, making preparation and adaptability particularly important.
With Antonelli chasing a historic championship and Verstappen eager to maintain his recent momentum, the United States Grand Prix could prove crucial to the Formula One title race.
The outcome will depend on how the leading drivers manage the circuit, tyre performance and changing race conditions as the championship battle enters a decisive phase.
