Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam was involved in an incident with fans during a President’s Trophy Grade-I match in Islamabad, where footage circulating on social media appears to show him throwing away a spectator’s mobile phone.
The incident took place at Diamond Ground during the fourth round of the first-class competition. Babar was representing OGDCL against State Bank of Pakistan.
Fans Enter Field During Match
According to reports, several spectators entered the playing area during the match while attempting to take photographs with Babar.
The Pakistan batter was also surrounded by fans while fielding, with spectators seeking selfies and pictures. The repeated interruptions reportedly caused frustration among the players.
After Babar was dismissed for 21 runs, more fans gathered around him as he made his way back toward the pavilion.
A video shared on social media appears to show Babar taking a mobile phone from one of the spectators before throwing it away as the crowd surrounded him.
Babar Struggling for Runs
The incident came during a difficult period for Babar in domestic cricket.
The former Pakistan captain returned to first-class cricket with OGDCL after almost seven years away from the domestic competition. His previous domestic appearance had come in the 2019 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final.
In his first match back, Babar scored 12 and four in the two innings. He subsequently made 21 in his latest outing, leaving him with 37 runs across his first three innings for OGDCL.
In the first innings of the latest match, Babar was dismissed after top-edging a pull shot against Arshad Iqbal, with a fielder completing the catch at mid-wicket.
During the second innings, Test cricketer Faheem Ashraf dismissed him lbw.
Babar’s return to domestic cricket was aimed at giving him regular first-class match practice and an opportunity to work on his batting form. His performances will continue to be followed as the President’s Trophy progresses.
