Cristiano Ronaldo Targets 1,000 Career Goals as Portugal Start New Chapter

Cristiano Ronaldo has reaffirmed his desire to reach the 1,000-goal milestone while preparing to continue his international career as Portugal begin a new chapter under head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain spoke at the Portugal Football Summit ahead of the team’s UEFA Nations League match against Wales.
Ronaldo currently has 979 goals across club and international football, including 833 at club level and 146 for Portugal. He needs 21 more goals to reach the landmark figure he has openly discussed in recent years.
Ronaldo wants both personal and team success
When asked whether reaching 1,000 goals or winning another Nations League title was more important, Ronaldo said he hoped to achieve both objectives.
He described reaching 1,000 goals while representing Portugal as a special achievement but stressed that he remains focused on enjoying football and helping the national team.
Ronaldo said reaching the milestone in Portugal colours would represent a memorable part of his career, although he does not consider it the end of his journey.
New era under Jorge Jesus
Portugal are beginning a new period under Jorge Jesus, who replaced Roberto Martinez following the team’s disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign.
Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the round of 16, with Spain eventually going on to win the tournament.
Ronaldo said discussions with the Portuguese Football Federation and the new coach played an important role in his decision to continue playing for the national team.
He believes he can still contribute on the pitch through goals, assists and his experience.
Retirement decision remains open
Despite his age, Ronaldo has not set a specific retirement date.
The veteran forward said he has learned to focus more on the present rather than trying to determine exactly what will happen in the future.
He acknowledged that retirement is possible, but said he does not know when that moment will arrive.
Ronaldo also made it clear that he would be willing to step away if he believed he could no longer make a meaningful contribution to Portugal.
Focus remains on football
Ronaldo has faced criticism throughout his long career, but he continues to insist that he remains motivated to compete at the highest level.
Rather than concentrating entirely on reaching 1,000 goals, he said he wants to enjoy each day and continue contributing to his team.
With 979 career goals already recorded, the Portuguese star is now 21 goals away from the landmark.
For now, Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s plans as the national team begins a new era under Jorge Jesus, with the Nations League providing the next opportunity for the veteran captain to add to his remarkable career record.
