The death toll from a tunnel explosion at an under-construction hydroelectric project in India’s northeastern state of Sikkim has risen to 22, as rescue teams continue searching for the remaining victims.

According to local authorities, seven additional bodies were recovered on Thursday, while rescue operations remain underway.

Explosion at Hydroelectric Project

The incident occurred on Monday inside a tunnel at a hydroelectric project being developed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) on the Teesta River near the village of Samardung.

Officials believe the explosion may have been caused by methane gas trapped within or released from surrounding rock formations. The blast filled the tunnel with dense fumes and toxic gases, trapping workers inside.

Rescue Operations Continue

Emergency response teams are continuing search and recovery efforts despite difficult conditions inside the tunnel.

Authorities said rescue work has been complicated by:

  • Accumulated mud and water inside the tunnel
  • Poor visibility
  • Hazardous air quality caused by suspected gas leakage
  • Challenging access to affected areas

Officials have indicated that the chances of finding additional survivors are limited due to the conditions inside the tunnel.

Financial Assistance for Families

NHPC has announced financial assistance for the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.

The company said it will provide 500,000 Indian rupees (approximately $5,178) as ex-gratia compensation to each affected family.

Investigation and Safety

Authorities are expected to continue investigating the cause of the explosion while rescue operations remain ongoing. The incident has also renewed attention on safety measures at large infrastructure and construction projects, particularly those involving underground excavation.
