Five Indian Air Force Personnel Killed in Transport Aircraft Crash in Assam

NEW DELHI — Five Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel were killed after a military transport aircraft crashed while attempting to land at an airbase in the northeastern state of Assam on Saturday, according to an official statement.

The aircraft involved was a Russian-made Antonov An-32, which was reportedly conducting a routine flight operation when the accident occurred near the city of Jorhat.

Investigation Underway

In a statement, the Indian Air Force expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and confirmed that an inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the crash.

Officials said a court of inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Media reports indicated that emergency response teams were dispatched to the crash site, where the aircraft sustained significant damage.

Aircraft Widely Used for Transport Operations

The Antonov An-32 is a twin-engine transport aircraft used by the Indian Air Force for carrying personnel, military supplies, and humanitarian assistance, particularly in remote and mountainous regions.

The IAF operates a fleet of An-32 aircraft, which are designed to perform in challenging weather conditions and at high altitudes.

Recent Aviation Incidents

The accident follows several military aviation incidents reported in India in recent years, including aircraft involved in training and operational missions.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the cause of the crash, and investigations are ongoing.

The Indian Air Force said it remains committed to supporting the affected families and conducting a thorough review of the incident.
