Foul Odour Along Karachi Coast Linked to Decaying Phytoplankton
Residents in several areas along Karachi’s coastline have reported a strong foul smell, which has been linked to the decomposition of marine plants and phytoplankton.
According to WWF-Pakistan technical adviser Moazzam Khan, changes in sea temperatures can cause large quantities of phytoplankton to die and wash onto the shoreline, where their decomposition produces an unpleasant odour.
Why Does Karachi’s Coast Smell?
Khan explained that variations in sea temperature can affect marine vegetation and lead to the death of significant amounts of phytoplankton.
When the dead marine organisms accumulate along the coast and begin to decompose, they can release gases and compounds that create a noticeable foul smell.
He added that the end of the monsoon season and a reduction in wind speeds can also influence the marine ecosystem and contribute to the accumulation of decaying material along the shoreline.
Karachi Weather Forecast
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast hot and humid weather in Karachi.
The Met Office said that the low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea has weakened further. As a result, sea breezes are expected to return to the city from the evening.
The return of stronger sea breezes could help improve air circulation along Karachi’s coastal areas.
Weather Outlook for Pakistan
The Meteorological Department has also issued a broader seasonal outlook for the country.
According to the department, winter may continue for a longer period in the northern and upper regions of Pakistan.
Winter rainfall is also expected to remain above normal across the country, according to the latest forecast.
For Karachi, weather conditions along the coast will continue to depend on factors including sea temperature, wind speed and seasonal changes in the marine environment.
