France Edge Italy in Five-Set Thriller as VNL 2026 Opens With Major Upsets

The Men’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2026 began with a dramatic opening day, featuring multiple five-set matches and several surprising results as top international teams clashed across different venues.

One of the standout matches saw Olympic champions France narrowly defeat world champions Italy in a tense five-set battle. France secured a 3-2 victory after a closely contested match that featured momentum swings and extended rallies, with both teams pushing each other to the limit.

Italy’s Kamil Rychlicki was the highest scorer of the match, while France responded with a strong team performance in crucial moments. France ultimately sealed the win in a tightly contested final set.

France players and coaching staff described the match as a high-intensity contest, noting the importance of serving pressure and mental strength in deciding the outcome.

Belgium Impress on VNL Debut

In another major result, Belgium made a strong debut in the competition by defeating World Championship silver medalists Bulgaria in four sets.

After losing the first set, Belgium responded strongly to win the next three sets in close finishes. The result marked an impressive start for the debutants in the VNL.

Bulgarian star Aleksandar Nikolov was the top scorer of the match, but Belgium’s balanced team performance and improved serving helped them secure the victory.

Other Opening Day Results

Defending champions Poland began their campaign with a straight-sets win over Cuba, showing strong form in their opening match.

Japan also registered a clean win against Ukraine, while Slovenia edged hosts China in a closely fought five-set encounter.

In another key match, the United States defeated Türkiye, while Germany produced a surprise win over Canada in a dramatic five-set battle.

The opening day of VNL 2026 highlighted the competitive nature of this year’s tournament, with several matches going the distance and multiple top-ranked teams facing early challenges.
