Gambhir Advises Rishabh Pant to Play Natural Game Ahead of Afghanistan Test

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has encouraged Rishabh Pant to focus on his natural playing style ahead of the one-off Test match against Afghanistan.

Pant, who has recently faced a dip in form, has been replaced as vice-captain for the upcoming match. KL Rahul will serve as Shubman Gill’s deputy in his place.

Focus on Natural Play

Speaking to reporters on the eve of the Test in New Chandigarh, Gambhir said players should not overthink their roles and should instead focus on performing for the team.

He emphasized that while players must adapt to match situations, they should not be asked to change their core style of play.

Pant’s Recent Form

Rishabh Pant has been an important part of India’s Test setup since his debut in 2018, scoring over 3,000 runs in the format at an average above 40.

However, his recent performances in limited-overs cricket and the IPL have been below expectations, leading to increased scrutiny of his form.

Team Perspective

Gambhir acknowledged recent setbacks in India’s Test results but expressed confidence in the team’s young players and their ability to improve.

He highlighted past series performances as signs of potential and said the team is focused on building towards future competitions.

Afghanistan Preparing for Key Test

The match is not part of the World Test Championship cycle but remains an important fixture for Afghanistan as they continue to develop in Test cricket.

Afghanistan’s coach Richard Pybus said the team is focused on execution and preparation, emphasizing control and discipline going into the match.
