Gilgit-Baltistan Moves Closer to 5G Internet Rollout

The federal government has approved policy directives allowing telecom companies to begin 5G trials in Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a major step toward improving digital connectivity in the region.

According to officials, the directives were prepared by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority on behalf of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council and approved under the Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018.

Federal Minister Amir Muqam announced the approval and said the initiative would help accelerate digital transformation, strengthen communication infrastructure, and create new opportunities for innovation in remote areas.

Officials added that the introduction of 5G services is expected to support tourism, improve business activity, and enhance internet access across the mountainous region.

The development also reflects ongoing coordination efforts led by Gilgit-Baltistan Caretaker Minister for Information and IT Ghulam Abbas, who worked with federal authorities and relevant institutions to advance the project.

According to officials, the approval of the policy framework also clears the way for a future 5G spectrum auction, enabling telecom operators to launch next-generation internet services in Gilgit-Baltistan in the coming months.
