Government Plans Expansion of Electric Bus Network in Rawalpindi and Islamabad
The federal government has proposed a significant increase in funding for public transportation projects in Rawalpindi and Islamabad under the Budget 2026-27, aiming to improve mobility and expand environmentally friendly transport services.
According to budget documents, the subsidy allocated for the Metro Bus Service and Green Electric Bus projects has been increased to Rs. 7.3 billion, compared to Rs. 3 billion in the previous fiscal year.
Increased Support for Public Transport
Officials say the additional funding will help strengthen existing public transport operations while supporting the expansion of electric bus services across the twin cities.
The initiative is intended to provide commuters with more affordable, accessible, and sustainable transportation options.
Expansion of Green Electric Bus Routes
As part of the proposed plan, the Green Electric Bus network will be expanded to cover 20 additional sectors and routes in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The expansion is expected to improve connectivity in underserved areas and provide greater convenience for daily commuters.
Existing Transport Network
The Metro Bus Service, which has been operating between Rawalpindi and Islamabad since 2014, remains one of the region’s most widely used public transportation systems.
Currently, public transport services operate on 23 routes across Rawalpindi Division. Under the new plan, Green Electric Buses will be introduced on 20 more routes in phases during the upcoming fiscal year.

The proposed investment reflects the government’s broader efforts to promote modern and environmentally friendly transportation solutions while reducing reliance on conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
