England secured a place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 after coming from behind to defeat Congo 2-1 in an exciting group-stage clash on Wednesday.
Captain Harry Kane scored twice in the second half to inspire England’s comeback after Congo had taken a surprise lead before halftime through Brian Cipenga.
Kane leveled the score with a well-placed header before producing the match-winning moment in the 86th minute, firing a powerful shot into the top corner to complete the turnaround.
Speaking after the match, Kane praised his team’s determination.
“We kept believing and knew our chance would come. Everyone in this squad is capable of stepping up, and today it was my turn,” he said.
For much of the contest, Congo looked on course for a famous victory as England struggled to break down their disciplined defense. However, England’s persistence paid off in the closing stages thanks to Kane’s clinical finishing.
The victory sends England into the knockout stage, where they will face co-host Mexico in the round of 16 on Sunday.
Kane has now scored five goals at this year’s FIFA World Cup, taking his tournament tally to 13 goals—the highest by any England player in World Cup history. He has also extended his overall international scoring record to 84 goals for his country.
England will now aim to carry this momentum into the knockout rounds as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
