Gilgit-Baltistan Introduces New Climate and Agriculture Policies

The Gilgit-Baltistan government has introduced two new policy initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and supporting the agriculture sector with assistance from the European Union (EU).

EU Ambassador to Pakistan Raimundas Karoblis launched the region’s first GB Carbon Strategy and Action Plan, along with the proposed Agriculture Policy and Action Plan 2027–2036.

The two policy frameworks were developed for the Gilgit-Baltistan government through an EU-supported policy project. The initiatives focus on addressing climate-related challenges, protecting the environment and supporting sustainable economic development in the region.

The Carbon Strategy and Action Plan was formally unveiled during a ceremony held at the Gilgit Secretariat Complex.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Karoblis said climate action, environmental protection and sustainable economic development in Gilgit-Baltistan remain important areas of cooperation for the European Union.

He said the EU is committed to supporting Gilgit-Baltistan in responding to the increasing impacts of climate change and plans to strengthen its technical and financial cooperation with the regional government following the completion of the policy development phase.

The ambassador said the next phase would focus on supporting the implementation of the newly developed strategy through expanded cooperation between the EU and the Gilgit-Baltistan government.

During the ceremony, Ashab Ullah Baig, Team Leader and Carbon Expert of the EU Policy Support Project to the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, briefed participants on the main features and strategic priorities of the Carbon Strategy and Action Plan.
