Japan to face Fiji in Pacific final

Jones Eyes Victory as Japan Sets Up Pacific Nations Cup Final Against Fiji

Japan will look to extend their winning streak under head coach Eddie Jones in the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup final after a dominant 49-27 semi-final victory over Samoa in Tokyo on Sunday. Japan’s powerful performance featured seven tries, four in the first half and three in the second, propelling them to their third consecutive win under Jones’ leadership.

With this win, Japan will face defending champions Fiji in the final next weekend in Osaka. Fiji secured their place with a 22-3 win over the United States in the first semi-final on Saturday.

“It was a significant step up for the team,” Jones remarked after the game. “Samoa presented a tougher challenge than our previous opponents, and I thought we started the match with excellent intent, especially against a strong wind.”

Jones noted that improving their ruck defense will be crucial if Japan hopes to secure the title for the first time since 2019. “As pleased as we are to reach the final, our sole focus now is on winning it,” he added. “We’re preparing to face a high-quality team in Fiji, and we have a full week to get ready.”

Dylan Riley set the tone for Japan’s victory with an early try in the sixth minute. Riley, who had previously dazzled with a solo effort against the United States, capitalized on a through kick and scored, with Seungsin Lee adding the conversion.

Japan further increased their lead with a penalty try four minutes later, leading to Samoa winger Elisapeta Alofipo being shown a yellow card. Despite the challenges, Samoa fought back and scored a try through Tuna Tuitama in the 13th minute.
