Joao Fonseca to Take Break from Tennis After Injury-Plagued Season

Brazilian tennis player Joao Fonseca has announced that he will take a break from competition and skip the upcoming Asian swing of the ATP season.

The 20-year-old said he needs additional time to recover physically and mentally after dealing with several injuries during a challenging 2026 season.

Fonseca shared the decision on social media, saying he had discussed the matter with his team before deciding to give his body and mind more time to recover.

Fonseca Recently Returned in Davis Cup

Fonseca missed the US Open because of abdominal pain but returned to action last weekend in the Davis Cup.

He helped Brazil secure a 3-1 victory over Switzerland in Rio de Janeiro, defeating Dominic Stricker 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in his match.

The world No. 28 said he made a major effort to return for the Davis Cup but still requires more recovery time.

Asian Events to Miss

The Brazilian will not compete at the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo, scheduled from September 30 to October 6.

He will also miss the Shanghai Masters, which follows the Tokyo event.

Fonseca’s decision comes after a season in which injuries affected his participation in several important tournaments.

Strong Performances Despite Injuries

Fonseca has still produced some notable results in 2026.

He defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the third round of the French Open before reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

The Brazilian also advanced to the third round at Wimbledon.

Earlier in the year, recurring back problems contributed to his first-round exit at the Australian Open.

Fonseca will now focus on recovery before returning to competitive tennis.
