American swimmer Kate Douglass set a new world record in the women’s 50m freestyle at the 2026 Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis, delivering a stunning performance at the Indiana University Natatorium.

Douglass clocked a time of 23.59 seconds on Friday, breaking the previous world record of 23.61 seconds and becoming the fastest woman ever in the event.

The 24-year-old’s performance came in a closely contested race, with fellow American Gretchen Walsh finishing second in 23.78 seconds, also inside the previous American record. Anna Moesch placed third in 24.20, followed by Torri Huske in 24.27.

The crowd witnessed a high-level sprint finish as Douglass touched the wall just ahead of Walsh, securing the historic mark in a tightly fought race featuring some of the world’s top sprinters.

After the race, Douglass said she was still in shock and had initially been aiming only to break the American record before realizing she had set a new world best.

The result strengthens her position as one of the leading swimmers in the world ahead of upcoming international competitions later this year.
