Leanne Wong Working Toward Full Fitness Ahead of U.S. Gymnastics Championships

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

American gymnast Leanne Wong is preparing for the upcoming U.S. Gymnastics Championships despite recently dealing with a wrist injury that interrupted her training.

The national championships are scheduled to take place from August 6 to 9 in Phoenix, where Wong hopes to compete after spending the past few weeks rebuilding her routines.

Wrist Injury Interrupted Training

Wong, the 2025 World Championships all-around silver medallist, revealed that she injured her wrist during a training session in the week leading up to the U.S. Classic.

The injury required her to take a break from training for more than a week, forcing adjustments to her preparation ahead of one of the most important domestic competitions of the season.

Speaking to reporters, Wong explained that she had been training all four apparatus before the injury occurred but decided to rest in order to support her recovery.

Adjusting Routines for Competition

Because of the injury, Wong has made several modifications to her routines while gradually returning to full training.

At the U.S. Classic, which marked her first competition since winning a world all-around silver medal in 2025, she performed a simplified beam routine that placed less strain on her wrist.

She expects to introduce a few additional adjustments at the national championships while continuing to prioritize her recovery.

Staying Focused on Long-Term Goals

Despite the setback, Wong remains optimistic and believes adapting to challenges is an important part of elite sport.

She said every athlete faces unexpected obstacles during their career, and success often depends on making the necessary adjustments and continuing to move forward.

Eyes on the Future

After graduating from the University of Florida, Wong is now training full-time as an elite gymnast with her sights firmly set on future international competitions, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).

Her performance at the U.S. Championships will be an important step as she continues her preparations for the next stage of her career.

Gymnastics fans will be watching closely to see how Wong performs as she returns to competition while managing her recovery and working toward another successful season.
