Matilda Hruby Wins Beach Wrestling World Title, Set for Dakar 2026

American teenager Matilda Hruby has made an impressive start to her beach wrestling career after winning two gold medals and securing a place at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The 16-year-old wrestler from Colorado will represent the United States in the 75kg beach wrestling event at the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.
Interestingly, Hruby was not impressed when she first tried the sport earlier this year.
Hruby Changed Her Mind After Winning Gold
Hruby first competed in beach wrestling at the U17 Pan American Championships in Panama.
It was her first experience wrestling on sand, and she initially found the conditions difficult.
However, she went on to win the Pan American title. A few weeks later, she claimed another gold medal at the U17 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The world title came in just her second beach wrestling competition.
Her two appearances in the sport have therefore resulted in two gold medals.
Beach Wrestling Different from Freestyle
Hruby explained that beach wrestling requires a different approach compared with freestyle wrestling.
Competitors wrestle while standing, and points can be awarded when parts of the body other than the hands or feet touch the sand.
According to Hruby, this means wrestlers have to be careful with their knees, elbows and head during exchanges.
She initially approached her matches in Panama like freestyle bouts but quickly learned that the two disciplines require different tactics.
Upper-Body Style Helps Hruby
Hruby believes her upper-body wrestling style has helped her adapt to beach wrestling.
Since going down to the sand can result in conceding points, controlling an opponent from the upper body can be particularly useful.
She said beach wrestling also allows her to enter matches with a clearer plan and focus on specific techniques against each opponent.
World Title Earned Dakar 2026 Opportunity
Hruby learned after the Pan American Championships that she had qualified for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The U17 World Championships in Baku then provided an important opportunity to gain more experience before the Youth Olympics.
Her coach also gave her extra motivation before the final in Azerbaijan.
With another American wrestler having lost her final, Hruby was told that winning would give the United States a chance to hear its national anthem at the championships.
Hruby responded by winning the final and securing the gold medal.
Now, the young American wrestler will take her growing experience in beach wrestling to Dakar, where the discipline will feature at a Summer Youth Olympic Games for the first time.
