SEPANG: Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen claimed his first victory of the season after winning a rain-affected and action-packed Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday.
The Red Bull driver produced a strong performance in difficult conditions to secure his 72nd Formula 1 victory. It was also Red Bull’s first win of the season.
Verstappen finished 2.307 seconds ahead of Mercedes driver and championship leader Kimi Antonelli, while seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third place after a major recovery during the race.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished fourth after recovering from last place during the early stages. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar was fifth, followed by McLaren driver Oscar Piastri and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson.
Fernando Alonso secured eighth place for Aston Martin, his best result of the season so far. McLaren’s Lando Norris finished ninth, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.
The result strengthened Antonelli’s position at the top of the championship standings. His advantage increased to 84 points over Mercedes teammate George Russell, who was forced to retire late in the race because of a power-related problem.
Verstappen said he was pleased to finally secure a victory after the challenges faced by his team during the season.
The race was delayed by around 100 minutes after heavy tropical rain affected the circuit. When the event eventually began, several drivers opted for intermediate tyres because of the wet conditions.
Antonelli quickly moved into the lead at the start, with Russell also passing Verstappen. Hamilton, who started on soft slick tyres, struggled for grip and dropped several positions.
The race changed significantly on lap nine when Valtteri Bottas went off the track and the safety car was deployed. Most drivers then switched to dry-weather tyres.
Antonelli selected medium tyres, while Verstappen moved to soft tyres. Hamilton remained on track before eventually losing ground.
After the restart, Verstappen overtook Antonelli and regained the lead. He maintained his advantage for the remainder of the race despite changing weather and several safety-car periods.
Hamilton gradually worked his way back through the field. By lap 23, he had moved into fifth place after passing Lawson.
The Ferrari driver continued to push before making another pit stop on lap 31. A late virtual safety car and then a full safety car brought most of the leading drivers into the pits for fresh soft tyres.
Russell’s retirement opened the way for Hamilton to challenge for a podium position. Hamilton eventually passed Hadjar during the final four-lap sprint to secure third place.
Verstappen’s victory marked his first Formula 1 win since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year and gave Red Bull an important boost in the championship battle.
