Pakistan Aim to Bounce Back Against Philippines in ASEAN Cup

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Pakistan will look to respond strongly when they face the Philippines in their second Group B match of the FIFA ASEAN Cup on Tuesday.

The national team is under pressure after suffering a 4-0 defeat against Thailand in their opening match of the tournament.

Pakistan looking to improve

Pakistan managed to keep Thailand under control for much of the opening half-hour, with the defence making several important interventions.

Mohibullah made a key interception, Ali Raza produced a timely tackle, while goalkeeper Yousuf Butt also made an important save.

However, Thailand eventually broke the deadlock when Teerasak Poeiphimai reacted quickly to a rebound. Pakistan then conceded a second goal after a misplaced pass from captain Abdullah Iqbal.

Pakistan made attacking changes after the interval, with Shayek Dost, Hayyan Khattak and Alamgir Ghazi introduced to add more threat going forward.

The full-backs also moved higher up the pitch, while Abdul Samad Arshad came close to scoring when his effort went narrowly wide.

Thailand added another goal around the hour mark before Poeiphimai completed his hat-trick late in the match. Jude-Bell Soonsup scored Thailand’s other goal.

Yousuf Butt sees positives

Pakistan goalkeeper Yousuf Butt said the team could take some positives from the defeat despite the disappointing scoreline.

Butt acknowledged the difference in quality between the two sides but said Pakistan were not completely outplayed during the match.

He stressed the need for the team to become more effective in both attack and defence, particularly when dealing with opportunities around the box.

Pakistan will now focus on improving their finishing, defensive concentration and overall performance in different phases of the game.

Philippines challenge ahead

Butt is also familiar with the Philippines, having played football there last year. He believes that familiarity could help Pakistan prepare for Tuesday’s match.

Pakistan will be hoping to turn the lessons from their opening defeat into a stronger performance against the Philippines.

With their qualification hopes still dependent on their remaining group matches, the Green-shirts will need a positive result to keep their campaign on track.
