Pakistan, Gates Foundation Discuss Cooperation in Agriculture and Public Health

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Gates Foundation Chair Bill Gates have discussed expanding cooperation between Pakistan and the foundation in agriculture, public health, digital innovation and artificial intelligence.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the discussions also covered Pakistan’s efforts to eradicate polio, improve maternal and child health, strengthen nutrition and immunisation programmes, and expand digitisation and financial inclusion.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to eliminating polio and appreciated the Gates Foundation’s continued support for the country’s vaccination and public health initiatives.

Bill Gates said that polio eradication remains important for protecting future generations and welcomed the prime minister’s efforts to coordinate with provincial governments on vaccination programmes.

Focus on Agricultural Innovation

The prime minister also briefed Gates on agricultural reforms being pursued by the government, particularly in areas such as biotechnology, research, climate resilience and farmer capacity building.

Both sides agreed to explore potential cooperation in improved seeds, livestock genetics and emerging agricultural technologies.

Shehbaz Sharif also expressed interest in expanding collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital innovation, public health and agriculture.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain engagement and explore initiatives aimed at supporting sustainable development, technological progress and improvements in social-sector services.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also invited Bill Gates to visit Pakistan at a convenient time.
