Pakistan Railways Launches Plan for First-Ever Fully Digital Freight System
Pakistan Railways has announced a major modernization plan to introduce a fully digital freight management system along with a 1,700-kilometer fiber-optic network aimed at upgrading railway operations across the country.
The initiative is part of a broader digitization drive designed to improve freight services, passenger operations, and overall efficiency within the national rail system.
Major Step Toward Railway Modernization
According to official project documents, the program—named the Railway Advance Infrastructure Network (RAIN)—is being described as a landmark step in Pakistan Railways’ modernization efforts.
The system will introduce a comprehensive digital ecosystem to streamline operations and improve coordination across departments.
Officials said the project will include the development of a high-capacity fiber optic backbone, with:
- 700 km of railway-owned fiber infrastructure
- 1,000 km developed in partnership with the Frontier Works Organization
Digital Freight and Tracking System
As part of the upgrade, Pakistan Railways will introduce its first fully digital freight manifest system. This will help automate documentation, improve cargo tracking, and reduce delays in freight handling.
The system is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in cargo operations across the country.
GPS Tracking and Smart Operations
The project also includes the installation of GPS-based tracking systems for locomotives and rolling stock. This will allow real-time monitoring of train movement and improve operational safety and scheduling.
Officials say the initiative will mark a significant shift toward smart railway management and is expected to modernize Pakistan’s transport infrastructure in the coming years.
