Punjab Makes Online Property Tax Payments Mandatory

Punjab Makes Online Property Tax Payments Mandatory

The Government of Punjab has introduced a new policy making online payment of property tax mandatory under the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2026–27.

According to officials, property owners will no longer be able to pay property tax through manual or cash-based systems. Instead, all payments will be processed exclusively through digital platforms.

The government stated that the step has been taken to improve transparency, enhance efficiency, and reduce irregularities in the tax collection process.

Officials added that the move follows the successful digitalization of vehicle token tax payments, which are already being handled through online banking and electronic systems across the province.

The provincial administration said that shifting to a fully digital system is part of broader reforms aimed at modernizing revenue collection and strengthening accountability in public finances.

Authorities believe that the new system will make tax payments easier for citizens while also reducing administrative delays and minimizing the risk of corruption.

As part of the new budget measures, the government has also announced a 5 percent discount for taxpayers who opt for property assessment through the self-assessment scheme.

Officials expect that combining self-assessment with mandatory online payments will encourage greater tax compliance and improve overall revenue collection.
