Serena Williams Falls in Berlin Open Doubles Match Ahead of Wimbledon Return
Serena Williams experienced a setback in her comeback campaign after losing her opening-round doubles match at the Berlin Open on Tuesday.
Williams, partnering with Karolina Muchova, was defeated by Giuliana Olmos and Erin Routliffe in straight sets, 6–4, 6–4, bringing an early end to her participation in the WTA 500 grass-court event.
Despite the result, Williams received strong support from fans at the Steffi Graf Stadion, where the match drew a large and enthusiastic crowd.
The 44-year-old had recently returned to competitive action following a long break, having played her first professional match since the 2022 US Open during a previous event in London. Her comeback appearance there was shortened after an injury to her doubles partner.
Earlier in the day, Wimbledon organizers confirmed that Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams have been awarded a doubles wildcard entry for the upcoming tournament.
The Wimbledon Championships are set to begin in less than two weeks, marking another stage in the Williams sisters’ return to Grand Slam competition.
