The Government of Sindh has decided to terminate a construction contract for a key section of the BRT Red Line project in Karachi due to ongoing delays.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that the contract covering the Mosamiyat to Numaish section has been cancelled after the contractor failed to meet project deadlines despite multiple notices.

Work to Be Split Among Multiple Contractors

Following the termination, the government plans to re-award the remaining work on an emergency basis.

Officials said the project will now be divided into smaller segments and assigned to multiple contractors to speed up construction and improve efficiency.

Delays Despite Government Support

The Sindh government had previously attempted to resolve issues faced by the contractor, including concerns related to cost adjustments and project execution.

However, progress remained slow, prompting authorities to take decisive action.

Construction activities had resumed in November after intervention from the chief minister helped remove earlier bottlenecks, but the project still lacks a confirmed completion timeline.

Ongoing construction work has caused significant inconvenience for commuters, especially along University Road, where traffic congestion and delays continue to affect daily travel.

Concerns from Financiers and Stakeholders

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), which is financing the project, has also expressed concerns over the slow pace of development.

In addition, stakeholders have raised issues regarding environmental impact and project management.

Push for Faster Completion

Authorities say the new strategy of assigning work to multiple contractors is aimed at accelerating progress and ensuring timely completion of the BRT Red Line project.
