The Devil Wears Prada 2 Costume Designer Clarifies Story Behind Meryl Streep’s Viral Heels Scene

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Costume Designer Clarifies Story Behind Meryl Streep’s Viral Heels Scene

The costume designer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 has addressed the controversy surrounding a much-discussed fashion moment involving actress Meryl Streep in the film’s trailer.

Molly Rogers, the film’s costume designer, clarified that the Valentino Rockstud heels seen on Streep’s character were not her original choice and were added during production without her presence on set.

Speaking in an interview, Rogers explained that she had already travelled to Milan for filming when the decision was made by the production and marketing teams.

Designer Explains What Happened

According to Rogers, she was later informed that the shoes had been changed for a scene she was not present for.

She said she had selected a different pair for the character but learned afterward that the marketing team preferred the alternative design that appeared in the trailer.

Rogers expressed frustration at the decision, stating that costume choices for a character like Miranda Priestly require careful attention to detail and consistency.

Online Attention and Response

The heels quickly gained attention after the trailer’s release, sparking discussions on social media. The designer later responded to the reaction, noting that she had no involvement in the final shoe selection for that scene.

She added that audience opinions varied, saying she understood both positive and critical reactions to the styling choice.

Marketing and Brand Involvement

Reports suggest that the featured footwear, Valentino Rockstud heels, was part of a strategic brand placement.

The style, originally introduced in a previous Valentino collection, has remained a recognizable design in the fashion industry.

A representative connected to Valentino reportedly confirmed that the trailer generated significant online engagement and visibility for the brand.

Behind the Scenes Insight

Rogers also shared that the film’s fashion process involves close collaboration between designers, stylists, and production teams, where final decisions may differ from initial creative plans.

She emphasized that costume design for major film characters involves multiple layers of creative input and coordination.
