Two Years to Go: Softball Sets Its Sights on LA28 Olympic Games
Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail
With two years remaining until the LA28 Olympic Games, the international softball community is preparing for the sport’s sixth appearance on the Olympic stage.
The Olympic softball competition will take place from July 23 to July 29, 2028, at OKC Softball Park in Oklahoma City, USA, one of the world’s most recognized softball venues.
Six Teams to Compete for Olympic Gold
A total of six national teams will compete for the Olympic title at LA28.
As the host nation, the United States has already secured automatic qualification. The remaining five Olympic places will be determined through the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) qualification pathway.
Road to LA28 Begins with the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup
The qualification process starts with the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup 2026 Group Stage, where 18 national teams are competing across three host cities:
- Prague (Czech Republic)
- Lima (Peru)
- Oklahoma City (United States)
The top teams from the group stage will advance to the eight-team Finals, scheduled to be held in Redcliffe, Australia, in 2027.
The highest-finishing team at the Finals that has not already qualified for the Olympics will earn the first available ticket to LA28.
Additional Qualification Opportunities
The remaining Olympic spots will be awarded through regional qualification tournaments:
- Europe/Africa Qualifier
- Asia/Oceania Qualifier
- Americas Qualifier
The final Olympic berth will be decided through the Final Qualification Event, which is expected to conclude by March 2028.
Olympic Champions and Tournament Format
Japan enters the new Olympic cycle as the defending Olympic champion, having won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, the United States will aim to reclaim the Olympic title on home soil under the leadership of head coach Patty Gasso.
Each participating nation will register a 15-player squad for the Olympic tournament.
The competition format will feature:
- A single round-robin stage involving all six teams.
- The top two teams advancing to the gold medal game.
- The third and fourth-placed teams competing for the bronze medal.
Historic Venue to Host Olympic Competition
All 17 Olympic softball games will be played at OKC Softball Park (Devon Park), a venue with a rich history of hosting major international softball events.
The stadium will also host part of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage 2026, providing teams with valuable experience ahead of the Olympic Games.
Continuing Softball’s Olympic Legacy
Softball first became an Olympic sport at the Atlanta 1996 Games and has since appeared at:
- Sydney 2000
- Athens 2004
- Beijing 2008
- Tokyo 2020
The LA28 Olympic Games will mark the sport’s sixth Olympic appearance, bringing together the world’s top players as they compete for one of the most prestigious titles in international softball.
