WhatsApp Introduces Guest Calls Without Requiring an Account
WhatsApp is rolling out a new guest calling feature that allows people to join voice and video calls without creating an account or installing the messaging app.
The feature lets users join calls through a web browser using a shared invitation link. According to WhatsApp, guest calls are free, have no time limit and remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
How WhatsApp Guest Calls Work
A WhatsApp account is still required to create a call link. Users can open the Calls tab, tap the plus (+) button and generate a link to share with other participants.
People receiving the invitation can open the link in a browser, enter their name and wait for the host’s approval before joining the call.
The feature supports individual and group calls with up to 32 participants, making it useful for conversations with friends, family members or colleagues who do not use WhatsApp.
Features Available to Guest Participants
Guests can access several calling features, including screen sharing, emoji reactions and the option to raise their hand during a conversation.
However, their access is limited compared with regular WhatsApp users. Guests cannot view other participants’ phone numbers, send messages during calls or invite additional people.
The host retains control over the meeting and can remove a guest or end the call for all participants.
WhatsApp Says Guest Calls Remain Encrypted
WhatsApp says guest calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, helping keep conversations private.
The system uses a unique identifier generated by the web client to support call encryption, allowing people to participate without a standard WhatsApp account.
Calendar Integration Planned
WhatsApp is also working on integrations with Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook. The planned feature will allow users to add WhatsApp call links directly to calendar invitations through a plugin.
Recipients will be able to join scheduled calls even if they do not have a WhatsApp account. The company expects this capability to arrive later in 2026.
Guest Calls Rolling Out Gradually
The guest calling feature is being introduced gradually to users with the latest versions of WhatsApp on Android and iOS.
Availability may vary during the rollout, and some users may not see the option immediately. WhatsApp has not announced a confirmed date for worldwide availability.
The update could make WhatsApp calls more accessible by allowing people to connect with others without requiring every participant to register for the service.
