WhatsApp Testing “View Once” Feature for Text Messages
WhatsApp is working on a new privacy feature that allows users to send text messages that can be viewed only once. After the recipient opens the message, it will automatically disappear, adding an extra layer of privacy to chats.
Previously, the “View Once” option was limited to photos and videos, but the company is now expanding it to include regular text messages.
How the Feature Works
The feature works in a simple way:
- Users type a message as normal
- They long-press the Send button
- A new option appears to send it as “View Once”
- Once opened by the recipient, the message disappears permanently
This option is expected to work in both individual chats and group conversations, but not in WhatsApp Channels.
Availability Status
- The feature is currently under internal testing
- It has been spotted in Android beta testing
- The same feature is also being tested on iOS
- It is not yet available to the public beta users
Difference From Expiring Messages
WhatsApp already offers another privacy option called disappearing messages, where texts are automatically deleted after a set time.
However, the new View Once text feature is different, because:
- Messages disappear immediately after being opened
- No time-based expiry is needed
- The recipient can only view it a single time
