LONDON: Wimbledon continues to stand out as one of the most stylish sporting events in the world, where tradition remains just as important as tennis. From players dressed in signature all-white outfits to spectators arriving in elegant summer attire, the Grand Slam tournament maintains its unique identity while embracing subtle modern influences.

As the oldest tennis major, Wimbledon has long been associated with sophistication, heritage, and timeless fashion. The tournament, which runs from June 29 to July 12, will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2027, further highlighting its rich legacy.

Spectators Embrace Classic Wimbledon Style

Fans attending the championships often choose smart and elegant clothing, making Wimbledon a distinctive event compared to other sporting tournaments.

Finnish tennis coach Jari Hedman arrived wearing a white linen suit paired with a navy blazer and a bright orange tie, saying he wanted to honor the tournament’s traditional atmosphere.

Many visitors also preferred light-colored summer outfits. Prague-based engineer Lucie Ta wore a white dress with black polka dots, while American visitor Anne Freeman selected a floral dress and a Panama hat, describing the choice as a way to respect Wimbledon’s long-standing traditions.

Fashion experts note that Wimbledon continues to create a unique atmosphere where dressing smartly remains part of the overall experience.

Players Continue the Famous All-White Tradition

One of Wimbledon’s most recognizable traditions is its strict dress code, requiring players to wear clothing that is almost entirely white while on court.

The rule, which dates back to the tournament’s early history, remains one of the strictest in professional tennis. Even today, players find creative ways to express their personalities while staying within the guidelines.

Modern Designs Add Fresh Style

Japanese star Naomi Osaka showcased one of the tournament’s standout fashion moments by arriving in a kimono-inspired white outfit designed by Japanese designer Hana Yagi. The ensemble featured embroidered crane and cherry blossom patterns along with a traditional hair ornament before Osaka changed into her white match attire.

Osaka explained that the design was inspired by both her Japanese heritage and the film Kill Bill.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic wore a white jacket with green detailing inspired by classic tennis fashion from the 1920s, blending Wimbledon tradition with contemporary sportswear.

A Tradition That Sets Wimbledon Apart

Fashion writers say Wimbledon offers a glimpse into British sporting heritage unlike any other major tennis event.

Unlike the lively atmosphere of the US Open, Wimbledon is often viewed as a more refined occasion where elegant clothing, historic customs, and world-class tennis come together.

Members of the British royal family, including Catherine, Princess of Wales, are regular attendees and are frequently recognized for their polished fashion choices during the championships.

Although there is no formal dress code for spectators, many visitors continue to embrace Wimbledon’s classic style, making the tournament one of the most fashionable events on the global sporting calendar.
